Excitement is building around the latest product from VELUX! Now available at Hancock Lumber.
The Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight features a solar panel that captures any available daylight and uses it to recharge a highly efficient, fully concealed, battery powered operator and control system. The battery powered operator is the power source that opens and closes the skylight and the solar panel serves as the charging source of the system.
KEY FEATURES INCLUDE:
- Ease of installation. Remote controlled solar powered skylight requires no wiring, which makes for easy and cost effective installation.
- The solar panel will work on cloudy days and with indirect light. It does not have to be exposed to direct sunlight to function.
- The window runs on low self-discharge Nickel-metal Hydride batteries (LSD NiMH) that when at full charge can cycle the window completely open/shut 100 times on average. When exposed to direct or indirect solar irradiation the PV panel charges the batteries. The window can be oriented in any direction, even north.
- With the integrated rain sensor the solar powered skylight will close automatically, in case of inclement weather.
- Inner pane is laminated for additional safety. This means that if the glass accidentally breaks, the glass does not shatter. Laminated glass meets codes for products installed out of reach.
- Eight factory installed blinds are available to include in the purchase of your skylight.
- If the Solar Powered “Fresh Air” Skylight is ordered with a factory installed blind, the skylight and blind will arrive pre-programmed to one remote control.
- Tax Credit. The VSS is eligible for a 30% federal solar energy tax credit. This credit is on the total installation cost of the window(s) and any homeowner or owner of a second home, camp, condo that does have a federal tax burden can take the credit. What this amounts to is that depending on the installation cost, a homeowner will usually be able to have a motorized solar powered skylight with remote control and rain sensor for about the price of a manually operated one.
- EXAMPLE Tax Credit: Let’s say the cost for a typical VSS window is $1,300 and a contractor has agreed to install it for $1,200 as part of a kitchen remodeling project. That is a total of $2,500 and the 30% tax credit would be $750. When the homeowner applies and gets this tax credit, that will bring the cost of the $1300 VSS solar powered window down to $550!
EASE OF GETTING THE TAX CREDIT:
Contractors simply need to provide one thing for the homeowner – a total cost for the skylight installation or a line item for the skylight related part of all the work they are doing. The homeowner will keep that in their records and file a 5695 solar energy credit form where they simply write their name, social security number, the total install cost for the skylights and multiply by .3. That number is carried to their 1040 for the credit. They should download the Manufacturer’s Certification Statement and just keep it in their records. All of this is explained and the forms available online:
