Six years ago, Sawmill Chief Revenue Officer, Matt Duprey, started the James C. Place Memorial Golf Tournament in honor of a close friend and customer after his sudden passing. This tournament helps raise funds to support scholarships and programs for youth golf in the Mid-Coast Maine region.
Since its creation, the tournament has raised over $100,000 and more than $40,000 awarded in scholarships and donations. In the 2024 tournament, scholarships were awarded to Bryson Mattox of Oceanside High School, and Caden Nickerson + Joseph Parket both from Belfast Area High School.
In a letter to sponsors Matt Duprey shared, “We have been blessed in the last five years with huge support for this event. I cannot thank everyone enough for the help and the success of this event and what it means to everyone involved. We have been able to award many scholarships for aspiring golfers—some of the best high school golfers in Maine. Many of our scholarship recipients are still in college competing and pursuing their passion for the game of golf. We have been able to help youth programs grow and become more accessible to training and practice. All of this is a testament to what Jamie meant to all of us. He would be proud to know that we are still getting together in his memory to celebrate his life and help further the game of golf in this region.”
Hancock Lumber continues to be a proud sponsor of this event and the benefits these scholarships provide to the Maine youth! Congratulations to the scholarship honorees and to the organizers for another amazing tournament. From all of us on Team Hancock, a big thank you to Matt Duprey for keeping Jamie’s name and spirit alive through this incredible event!
