We really should have titled this post “What Can’t a Backsplash Do?” Our designers say that a well thought out backsplash or accent wall has all the power to tie the entire kitchen together. The backsplash can be a feature that is soothing to the eye in a kitchen with lots of color or mixed hardware. It can also be the feature that adds texture or uniqueness to a simple design. As Karen Alcorn, from our Design Showroom in Kennebunk, says, “It is all about knowing the space and knowing what the customer wants from it.”
Fun kitchen trends like a pop of color or mixed metals add character to the kitchen. But, they can also make a space feel divided or sectioned off. By adding a backsplash that ties in the color or the metallic tones the kitchen feels more unified and finished.
A backsplash can also serve as a feature that adds a fun, unique design element to the space. As we highlighted in our previous posts in this series, kitchen designs are becoming less monotoned and more fun/unique. One way to update a space and make it more fun, while maintaining a simple style, is to work in texture in an accent wall or backsplash. Shiplap and similar planked walls add an architectural element to the space without going overboard. It is simple and visually appealing and can also bring a space together as the eye naturally follows the lines across the room.
